Becoming is superior to Being. If I have heard that once since I met Brent, I have heard it a hundred times. Relax, enjoy the journey, stop and smell the flowers.

I am the one that is always focused on the end goal. When we take a trip, I am focused on the destination, what time we will reach our destination, what we will do while we are there, and when we will return home. Brent on the other hand is focused on enjoying the journey. He has a goal to get to our destination, but his route includes stopping at different attractions along the way that are not in my plan. Not planned stops, just random, did you see that, turn around stops that catch his attention along the route. And, if I am honest, we have seen some pretty awesome sites and learned some rather obscure information from the random stops on our journeys. The Lord has use situations over the years to teach me that the journey can be as exciting and rewarding as reaching the goal.

In February of 2017 Brent was diagnosed with cancer. That definitely wasn’t in our plans. The words that the Dr. said still echo in my mind, “it looks like cancer and it looks pretty bad.” After a few weeks of talking with Dr.’s and hearing options, we found ourselves taking a trip to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. As usual, I was focused on the goal. This was a trip to see specialists, get information and get this cancer gone. We were not in Texas to sight see, this was serious and we needed to treat the trip that way. Brent had other plans Not that he didn’t take the situation seriously, he did, but he wasn’t going to let the seriousness of the situation get in the way of enjoying the journey. After all, he had never been to Texas before and his Cowboy spirit was calling. If the Lord was taking him to Texas, he was going to enjoy it, regardless of why he was there. We spent quite a bit of time in Texas that year. Six weeks in the summer for chemo and radiation treatment and another six weeks in the fall for surgery. I am fairly certain that we saw more of Texas in that twelve weeks than most healthy people vacationing would in that same time. Every weekend that Brent was able at his urging we took a journey someplace. We visited Waco and the Joanna Gaines dynasty, saw the silos and shopped in the oh so overpriced shops. We visited Round Top and browsed through acres and acres of antiques and purchased a few souvenirs to add to our collection. We visited Galveston several times, went on a dolphin watching tour, sat on the beach, watched Friday night fireworks on the gulf and ate fish whose names we couldn’t always pronounce. We drove to San Antonio and went to The Alamo, a bucket list item for Brent. We just drove, out into the country where the brahmas and longhorns roamed. We visited state parks and historic sites, learned much Texas history and enjoyed the sunshine.

Oh, make no mistake, I kept us on task and continued to keep the goal in the forefront, getting better and getting home. But, what I learned from our time in Texas and what I continue to learn and have to be reminded of almost daily is that the journey can be as fun and satisfying as reaching the goal……becoming is superior to being.

So, when we started talking several months ago about the idea of a U pick Flower Farm you already know where my mind went. Plans, timelines, goals, how are we gonna questions and what ifs? And, like many times before I am quietly reminded by my husband to make it fun, and enjoy the journey.

After all, isn’t that the whole point of this Flower Farm? A place where those who visit can relax and have fun, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine, walk among the beauty of nature and the flowers, and take home a little piece of the country.

We hope you will join us this summer to stop and smell the flowers and take the time to enjoy the journey!
